Guide

Moving on short notice

The instinct when notice arrives is to wait until you know where you are going. It is almost always the wrong move.

Book before you know where you are going

This feels backwards and it is the single most useful thing in this guide. A provisional date costs nothing to hold and can be moved as often as you need.

Waiting until the onward address is confirmed means booking late, into whatever dates are left. The people with the least flexibility end up with the fewest options, which is exactly the wrong way round.

Storage is not a failure

If there is genuinely nowhere to go yet, a spell in storage and a two-part move is almost always better than signing for a property you have not properly seen.

The load goes into a container, sealed once, and comes out when you have somewhere. It is not handled in and out of a warehouse in between, which is where damage happens.

Do not move everything twice

If you are going into temporary accommodation first — a room, a relative, a short let — resist the urge to take everything with you.

Take what you need to live on and put the rest straight into store. Moving a whole household twice costs considerably more than storing most of it once.

  • What you need to live: clothes, documents, kitchen basics, work things.
  • What goes straight to store: furniture, books, anything seasonal, anything bulky.
  • What you sort out later: the loft, the shed, and whatever is in the cupboard under the stairs.

Being given notice is not a personal failing

It is worth saying. Landlords sell, terms end, employers relocate people, and none of that reflects on you — but it is a stressful thing to be on the receiving end of, and the trade does not always treat people in that position well.

You are entitled to the same survey, the same protection and the same plan as anyone buying a house.
